In our new dossier “What Germany owes Cameroon – on the need for climate reparations” We talk about the connections between colonial rule and climate destruction and make it clear: Without a consistent reappraisal of the past, climate justice remains an empty promise.
At the dossier release event on April 24.04.25, XNUMX, we discussed climate reparations and decolonial climate activism with Victorine Che, Fatim Selina, Tonny Nowshin, Lina Adil, and Oumarou F. Mfochivé at the Aquarium Berlin.
To develop reparations demands against the former colonial power Germany, we met with over 10 Cameroonian NGOs for a workshop on November 2023, 15. They were based in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon, while we participated digitally.
There, the Cameroonian participants discussed how climate damage could be measured and what measures could be taken to make communities more resilient. The suggestions ranged from setting up weather stations to strengthening civil society organizations and educational institutions. There was also considerable discussion about the intertwining of colonial guilt and climate guilt, and what form Germany's apologies could take.
