Consequences of lignite and the energy transition in East Germany

Socialization of costs, privatization of profits

Who will pay the subsequent costs of lignite mining? This question is once again coming into focus during the state elections in Saxony and Brandenburg. We asked the relevant democratic parties for their positions and hereby publish their answers.

Our new dossier also provides an overview of the current state of precautionary measures for the impacts of lignite mining, identifies risks, and proposes alternative approaches. Socialization of the energy sector would make it possible to design rehabilitation concepts, the energy transition, and structural change with a greater focus on the common good and with democratic participation of the local population.
