#7 How to socialize shopping centers?

With the Sorge initiative in the Parkcenter

Hand with yellow cleaning glove crushes a bouquet of flowersPart of the project: Thanks for nothing

A yawning emptiness in the former temples of consumerism: In many places, shopping centers stand empty, right in the middle of neighborhoods and city centers. Large areas remain unused, while people lack what they need for a good life: childcare, food supplies, advice. The "Care in the Parkcenter" initiative wants to socialize care work in the vacant Parkcenter in Berlin Treptow: In concrete terms, this means using empty spaces and creating entirely new infrastructures. But what are the local needs? And how does the initiative determine them? What are the investor's plans? And to what extent do they fit with the vision of a climate-friendly, feminist city? Chris talks about all of this with Anna and Hannah from "Care in the Parkcenter" in the new episode.

This week's news features a report on the draft hospital reform and a study on the care situation for unplanned pregnancies in Germany. In the final installment, we learn from the Initiative for a Social Center in Göttingen how they are fighting to transform the old, empty prison into a place of solidarity, care, and community!

Definitions

Grey energy: Grey energy refers to the amount of energy that must be used for the production, transport, storage, sale and disposal of a building (or product).

Municipalism: Since the 2010s, there has been talk of the emergence of the "new municipalism." This term often encompasses various urban social movements, neighborhood initiatives, electoral platforms, and parties that advocate for a solidarity-based, anti-racist, climate-friendly, and feminist city. Central to this is the understanding that the local level, self-government, and organizing are the starting point for larger social change. Spain's municipalist movement is particularly well-known, having also achieved successes in municipal politics in the 2010s. More information, e.g. here  or  here.
