How can countries like Cameroon demand justice for colonial exploitation and climate destruction?
Germany and Cameroon share a history marked by colonial exploitation and persistent neocolonial structures. While Germany built its wealth through industrialization and the consumption of fossil fuels—thus accelerating the climate crisis—countries like Cameroon have to bear the consequences. However, this reality is often downplayed in the mainstream media, portraying Germany's colonial past as distant history while portraying the Global South as dependent on Western "aid."
With the publication of our study "The Damage Done – the case for climate reparations from Germany to Cameroon," we aim to create a space for honest and insightful conversations about colonial responsibility, climate debt, and reparations. Together with Lina Adil, Fatim Selina Diaby, Victorine Che Thoener, Oumarou Mfochivé, and Tonny Nowshin, we will explore what justice might look like in the face of historical and ongoing climate justice.
Let us come together in solidarity, reflection and action.
