Release Event: Climate Reparations from Germany to Cameroon―Historical Perspectives on Climate Debt and German Colonial Responsibility

24. April | 19:00 bis 21:00

Free

How can countries like Cameroon seek justice for colonial exploitation and climate destruction?

Germany and Cameroon share a history marked by colonial exploitation and ongoing neocolonial structures. While Germany has built its wealth through industrialization and fossil fuel consumption—driving the climate crisis—countries like Cameroon are left bearing the consequences. Yet, mainstream narratives often downplay this reality, portraying Germany’s colonial past as distant history while framing the Global South as dependent on Western “aid.”

At the launch of our study, Climate Reparations from Germany to Cameroon―Historical Perspectives on Climate Debt and German Colonial Responsibility we’ll open up a space for honest and empathetic conversations about colonial responsibility, climate debt, and reparations. Together with Fatim Selina Diaby, Victorine Che Thoener, and Oumarou Mfochivé, we’ll explore what justice could look like in the face of historical and ongoing climate injustices.

Let’s come together in solidarity, reflection, and action. See you in Berlin on April 24th!
